Pick up at your hotel in Luang Prabang, start the day with a visit to the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, a non-profit museum and resource center founded in 2006 to preserve and interpret the lifestyles of the ethnic minorities of Laos. See professional exhibits on the country’s diverse cultural heritage, from the headdresses of the Akha people to the bamboo basketry of the Khmu. If you’d like, browse the gift shop that promotes handicrafts from village artisans. (Note: The museum is closed on Mondays.)

Then continue drive deep into the peaceful countryside, stopping to explore several villages off the tourist radar. Visit a Hmong, a Khmu and a Lowland Lao village to get a feel for the different lifestyles, traditions and religious customs of these ethnic communities. You’ll see local homes from the inside, see traditional dress, and hear explanations about different cottage industries and daily routines.

Continue on to the Kuang Si Waterfall for a refreshing swim in one of the tiered pools. Take a dip into the turquoise swimming hole with camera-worthy views of the cascading falls with a lush forest landscape as your backdrop. You’ll find this idyllic setting offers a popular escape from the heat of the day. Drop off at your hotel late afternoon.
